Francona: 2017 season left me 'pretty wiped out'

Indians manager Terry Francona said he's never been more "wiped out physically' after a season than this one.

The season ended for the Indians on Wednesday when they lost to the Yankees, 5-2, in Game 5 of the ALDS at Progressive Field. The Indians entered the postseason as the AL's top seed after winning 102 games. The Yankees snuck in the back door as the wild card.

Francona, 58, underwent heart ablation surgery on July 7 to correct an irregular heartbeat. He was forced to leave two games in June because lightheadedness and a rapid heart rate. In the aftermath, he did not manage the AL All-Star team on July 11 as he recuperated in Cleveland. He rejoined the Indians on July 14 for the start of the second half.

"This is the most wiped out I've ever been after a season physically," said Francona in a Friday meeting with reporters. "When I go home, whenever that is, I need to make a concerted effort in getting stronger.

"I don't mean stronger as in looking good in the lobby stronger. I have a responsibility to do something here. I feel at times I leaned on Millsie (Brad Mills, bench coach) and some of the coaches too much. It's supposed to be the other way around.

"So I need to get a little stronger so I can uphold my responsibilities here because that's not good."

Francona, when asked if intended on managing the Tribe next year, said yes. Then he turned to Chris Antonetti, Indians president of baseball operations, and said, "Unless there's something I don't know" which brought a smile from Antonetti and laughter from the media.
